Cleveland, NY, October 1, 2017– The Cleveland Historical Society is pleased to welcome Joseph DiGiorgio, President of the Canastota Canal Town Corporation, to speak on Thursday, October 26, at 7:00 p.m.

In celebration of the Erie Canal Bicentennial, Joe will talk about the fascinating history behind the engineering of the Erie Canal. The construction of the canal began on July 4, 1817 in Rome, NY and was completed on October 26, 1825.  The canal linked the waters of Lake Erie to the Hudson River.

Joe is a retired Social Studies teacher and president of the Canastota Canal Town Corp. where he oversees the operations of the museum and its exhibits.  Over the years he has served on various village committees and organizations.  He also served as village historian for several years.  He is an active member of the Canastota Rotary Club.

The meeting will be held at the Cleveland Historical Society, the former St. James Episcopal Church, located at 6 North Street.  The event is free and open to the public.
